Imane Khelif files complaint over online harassment

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (51)

A lawyer for Algerian Imane Khelif says the gold medal-winning boxer has asked prosecutors in Paris to look into online harassment she faced during the Olympics about her gender and presence at the Games.

The lawyer, Nabil Boudi, said in a statement on Instagram that his firm had filed a complaint with the online hate unit of the Paris prosecutor’s office. It was not immediately clear where the complaint would lead. The Associated Press reported Sunday that under French law, it would be up to prosecutors to decide if an investigation is merited and who might be at fault.

Khelif faced a torrent of negative attention on social media after she won her first bout in the 66-kilogram (145-pound) division with an unusually swift stoppage. Her opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, quit the bout within 46 seconds after squarely taking some hard punches from Khelif, including one to the nose that left her complaining that she couldn’t properly breathe.

Khelif was assigned female at birth and the International Olympic Committee has repeatedly affirmed her qualifications to compete in a women’s division. But the knockout drew attention to a decision by the International Boxing Association last year to disqualify Khelif and another boxer, Lin Yu-ting, from its world championships. (Lin won a gold medal on Saturday night.)

France secure their 64th medal of the Games

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (58)

France may have suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the women’s basketball final — but Les Bleus still delivered on President Emmanuel Macron’s challenge to deliver 50-60 Olympic medals at their home Games.

The women’s basketball team’s set of silver medals was France’s 64th in total, their highest number since the 1900 Games which were also held in Paris.

They won 16 golds in total to finish fifth in the medal table, behind only the United States, China, Japan and Australia and ahead of neighboring Britain and Germany.

What an extraordinary gold medal match that was.

Just when it looked as though France had levelled things at the buzzer, it transpired Gabby Williams was on the line and thus it was only worth two points.

The final score is 67-66 and the USA have still not lost a women's basketball match since Barcelona 1992.

The perfect end to these Olympics, a battle for the ages.

A bizarre story on the final day of the Olympics.

A police statement reads: "At 2.45 pm, an individual was seen climbing the Eiffel Tower. The police immediately intervened and arrested the individual."

Videos were doing the rounds on social media of the culprit making his way up the iconic landmark without ropes and joking to the watching bystanders, "bloody warm, innit."

Fortunately the police intervened before things became too dangerous.

Sebastian Coe ‘considering’ IOC presidential bid

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (103)

Former running champion Sebastian Coe is “considering” putting his name forward to replace Thomas Bach as the president of the International Olympic Committee.

Coe, a former British runner and the current president of World Athletic, helped to organize the London 2012 Games and has long been considered a potential replacement for Bach.

Bach, 70, announced this week that he would step down from his role in 2025.

At a news conference to conclude the track and field programme at the Paris Games Coe, 67, said he had not yet decided to run but was considering it.

“I’ve always made it clear that if and when the opportunity arose, I would obviously give it serious thought,” he said. “The opportunity has arisen and clearly I need to think about it.”
