Jo Ann Steele Meaders passed away peacefully on July 12, 2024. Jo Ann was born on February 22, 1931 to Morton Charlie Steele and Myrtle Morris Steele. She was the fifth of seven children. She was preceded by her parents, five of her siblings: Robert, Dorothy, Frances, Margaret, Charles and her husband, J. Conrad Meaders. Jo Ann is survived by her son, Anthony Meaders, daughter, Iris Meaders, grandson, Conrad Ross Meaders, sister, Jean Williams (Roy) and a number of nieces and nephews and their children.



Jo Ann was born in Spalding County and spent her early years in the Spalding County and Jonesboro areas. She later moved to Atlanta, GA as an adult. Jo Ann literally met her husband at the street corner bus and trolley stop in Southwest Atlanta. Jo Ann was commuting to Federated Mutual Insurance Company in the Hurt Building in downtown Atlanta and Conrad was taking the trolley to Emory University. Conrad was smitten by her brown eyes and proposed after dating a short while. Jo Ann and Conrad were married on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1950, by Rev. Fred Glisson for which Camp Glisson is named. Jo Ann and Conrad spent the early years of their marriage in College Park, GA. They also lived for short periods in Savannah, GA and Asheville, NC. At that time, Jo Ann did volunteer work by driving a blood mobile for the Red Cross.



Jo Ann spent her remaining years residing on the north side of Atlanta. Jo Ann enjoyed her home, family and her married life. Jo Ann and Conrad later had two children Anthony and Iris. The family traveled extensively in the United States. As a couple, Jo Ann and Conrad traveled to numerous states, Canada, England, Scotland and Wales. Jo Ann went on 4 different cruises 2 of which were with each of her children. She cruised to the Bahamas with her son. And to Haiti, Aruba, Curacao, Columbia, South America and into the Panama Canal with her daughter. She made a trip to Alaska and a total of 3 trips to Hawaii. Jo Ann traveled to a total of 48 states. Jo Ann and Conrad also went on a mission trip to Costa Rica with their church. Jo Ann continued to travel in her senior years as well.


Jo Ann was always active in church. She was a member of several Methodist Churches in the Atlanta area. She was most active in Skyland United Methodist Church. Jo Ann and Conrad taught 2nd grade Sunday school. Jo Ann chaired several different committees and was active in the United Methodist women. Jo Ann sang in the choir in every church that she attended. Once widowed, Jo Ann participated in visitation to the shut ins of her church family.



Jo Ann was an accomplished seamstress who was known for her passion for sewing and creating exquisite needlepoint pieces, including a stunning depiction of Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Jo Ann spent time at her sewing machine for over 70 years having begun sewing in high school home economics. For years she made almost all of her clothing, her daughter's and a few items for her son as well. She sewed bedspreads and draperies. Jo Ann did alterations for her husband and children. In her retirement years, she made clothing for deceased premature babies that were born at DeKalb General Hospital where she volunteered as a pink lady. In later years, she made numerous baby bibs that were donated to local hospitals. Jo Ann also enjoyed painting with acrylics and drawing as well.



Jo Ann was a graduate of Jonesboro High School and attended business school in Atlanta, GA. In addition to her career as a homemaker, Jo Ann was employed in the insurance industry as well as by JC Penney and Nordson Corporation.



Jo Ann always felt that one should be kind to others. She was well known for her soprano voice and her love of singing. Jo Ann's interest in music started in high school Glee Club and continued until age 93, where she continued to burst into song.
